If you are in the United States for business (or for leisure too), one of the best ways to get around the cities and states is to rent a car. Some people come in at the car rental office with zero preparation, but you don’t want to be that person. Here are 5 tips to do it right: Do: It’s better to have an International Driving Permit
Your application to rent will be more credible when you have an International Driving Permit. Some companies/countries will accept your domestic driver’s license but some would request for an IDP. This will make your rental application hassle-free. Do: Pick a lesser known company which is far from the airport Known car rentals and car rentals near the airport usually have higher prices and slower processes (due to a large number of rental applications). Companies like Enterprise, Hertz, and Alamo will have more rigid pricing unlike with lesser-known companies which you can negotiate for a lower price. Do: Pay upfront to get a discount Just like in any financial transaction, prepaying or paying upfront will give you a discount on the overall price. Make sure that the car rental is legitimate to avoid being scammed. There are also many discount vouchers online so better so look for them before renting. Don’t: Get unnecessary insurance Insurances like international car insurance, liability insurance, and comprehensive insurance are the ones usually people get when they rent a car. This is not required of you to have one but car rental will try their best to make you sign up for insurance. It is up to you if you need one. Don’t: Overestimate your skills and underestimate the rules Most drivers in the United States drive an automatic but rental cars, by default, are in manual. If you are more familiar with an automatic, you get that one. Also, traffic rules abroad are far more different than what you have in your home country. Basic research on these rules will give you a glimpse of the rules and signs there. The car rental will also provide a basic guide or orientation to keep you safe.
